The Adventure Begins

What started as a fun drawing with my twitch community is turning into a full blown video game. Randy was created in 2021 and was quickly turned into Red and Randy within a couple of days. It started off as fun jokes about living and running around Florida Trailer parks in the 90s. Everyone in Florida knows a guy named Red and a guy named Randy (including myself) that can do a lot of things. Most of the time they drink lots of beer and still get whatever handyman job they are doing done efficiently and correctly. The rest of the neighborhood is filled with kids misbehaving, drug use, drunks, critters, bugs, construction workers, thiefs, drama, you name it. Florida trailer parks have it all. Tree houses, hotrods, broken down cars, crazy platforms for above ground pools, dirtbikes, ramps, hills, everything. It was the craziest environment.

After years of playing around with the Red and Randy game concept and slowly working on bits and pieces, and my own personal ups and downs, I returned to streaming and working on the game again. Full speed ahead! I had already built some of the characters out using Moho animation so all I had to do was learn a gaming engine. This is where I started working with Game Maker Studio 2(GMS2) and trying to learn code and do it all myself using one of GMS2’s templates. I have 20+ years of software experience, from The Adobe suite to programming machines and welding robots. Turns out gaming and backend code is a lot more difficult then expected…

This is where the supporters come in. I had talked with the Twitch chat about crowd funding a few times and decided we would browse Fiverr for a programmer. “Kareem enters the chats.” We found a guy that does GMS2 gaming code for $35. Kareem, a long time supporter of Swervey Jones immediately made a donation. Sounds like we are making a game. I reached out to the guy on fiverr to find out what files he would need, I showed him a video of the template version I made, and then over the next couple days I started prepping Sprite animations and backgrounds. This was more involved than he expected. “HunterslimeG has entered the chat.” As I am doing all of this prepwork for the game on streams, another long time supporter “Nachomama” shows up aware of the game and she sends HunterSLimeG to return to the chat. He does game code… and does it well! Next thing you know a week goes by and we are already playing a very rough but beautiful game demo.

The game is a go and we are working everyday on making sprites, characters, backgrounds, coins, HUDs, etc. I’m directing, designing, and animating everything and loading up a google drive for HunterslimeG to put it all together (and remind me that i didn’t do a sprite animation he needs and heres another great idea to add to the game). WE NEED VOICES! Well, I have had some fairly large clients over the years doing animations and digital designs. So, I reached out to Radio Personality and co-host/co-owner of a Mediocre time with Tom and Dan (AKA: Tomanddanlive) Daniel Dennis to see if he would be interested in doing the voice of Red and probably Randy. “I’m game for anything you need, man! You name it and I’ll do it for you.”

Here we are making a game about Florida living, with Flortida natives, with a Florida community, Let’s see what kind of trouble our good ol’ pals Red and Randy are getting into.
